go-outside Many of us have jobs that confines us to the sitting position for hours on end.  Sitting on chairs is a health hazard. Statistically, people whose lifestyle includes a lot of sitting have been found to be more prone to getting ill from cardiovascular diseases and even cancer. [1]  The habit of sitting for long periods creates a life of immobility. Most of the time, we sit with a slouch (when watching t.v. on the couch), or with a hunch (when we sit at an office desk).  Prolonged sitting in such positions slowly damages our spinal tissues, weakens muscles and reduces flexibility in tendons.

If work demands hours of sitting, why not bring the power of the gym to work?  I am  not a fan of gimmicks. I believe the best thing you can do for yourself is really to go outside every hour, get a stretch, do some jump squats, or push-ups to get the blood flowing and the spine nimble. However, this is not realistic for many people who have desk bound jobs and have stiff office wear that makes intermittent workouts uncomfortable. Most manufacturers have put controls in place so that you can manage the speed or stop the treadmill easily while at the desk. Many users of this device have noted improvement in their physiques since substituting the chair for the little treadmill. This makes a nifty little alteration to your work station, so that you have the chance of standing instead of sitting, and moving your legs as you work. Using a treadmill desk, is not substitute for going to the gym, or doing regular workouts. No. It is a substitute for sitting all day. What are the downsides to having a treadmill desk (apart from having to pay for one)? In the beginning, you may feel distracted because walking and typing takes getting used to. Some people who are very unfit, may initially feel ‘wobbly’. This only proves how sitting all day at work makes you ill at moving and coordination. In the long run, however, the health benefits outweigh everything else. Substituting the chair for the mill makes you more conscious of the need to move.
