Egon Schiele (1890– 1918) is one of Austria most celebtrated and famous artists.
By the time of his untimely death at the age of 28 of Spanish Flu, the artist had created an extensive portfolio of brilliant figurative drawings and paintings.
Schiele’s art was very much influenced by his mentor, Gustav Klimt, who was another famous Austrian artist.
General similarities between the two artists’ works were in the overall composition and poses of the human figure.
The figures were often close-cropped in the composition.
Poses were almost always flowing, the torso often shown bending forward or side-ward, limbs often bent, curved in a state of pausing after a movement.
The differences between the art of Shchiele to Klimt’s are more obvious. While the Klimt’s paintings were ornate and decorative, Schiele was the archetypal “Expressionist”.

Expressionism, the art movement, was at it’s developmental phase during the time and artists were begining to embrace the idea of creating emotional content in painting, while leaving out the need to create eye candy just for the sake of decoration or pleasantry.
Schiele’s portraits were not necessarily ugly, neither were they beautiful.
Egon Schiele created many sketches which showed his acute skill in drawing, rendering emotive images with a few simple pencil strokes.
Famous Paintings

Self-Portrait with Chinese Lantern and Fruits
The artist’s focus was on the human figures. Watercolors and sketches were initially influenced by fellow Austrian famous artist, Gustav Klimt.
The Artist’s Wife
One can see that Shiele’s focus was on erotic art, which are executed cleverly with simple curves and light application of color. His models were rendered not necessarily pretty. In fact some of the faces were ugly.
Schiele drew on his innermost feelings together with purely subjective expression. In many ways his representation of ugliness, contorted figures seemed more tormented than pleasure-ful. It is in much contrast to Klimt’s representation of the human figure. This was the “in thing” in Austrian society of the time, and brought the artist much recognition in his home country.
